Disclaimer : My writing skills are woefully inadequate to make a reader feel the thrill I experienced while watching Kumbalangi Nights! But, I will make an attempt ! Read on, it's slighty longer than usual!
I haven't been so bowled over by a movie and the performances in recent times as I have been today !!! Kumbalangi nights is the kind of film that makes a movie buff like me believe in the magic of cinema over and over again!!! It is movies like this that make me book tickets week after week hoping for an enthralling experience despite disappointments !!!!
Kumbalangi Nights is the tale of 4 brothers set in a rustic fishing village. The 4 brothers are as different as chalk and cheese and each are fighting different demons in their lives. How their lives come together and what family means is so deftly told in this endearing tale that the viewer also becomes one amongst them. The story starts off with sibling conflicts and ends up being a real thriller (for me at least)!!!!
The little hamlet has been so beautifully caught on camera by Shyju Khalid !!! The dialogues crisp, the story telling on point and direction top notch! Syam Pushkaran and Madhu C Narayanan
- hats off!!! What an astounding story line and how amazingly directed!!!! May this be the beginning of many many more fascinating stories that will regale the audience !!!
It's been just a week into the release of the movie and I will not delve any deeper into the story than I already did, because I want everyone who reads this to go and watch it on the big screen!
Soubin, Shane, Sreenath, Mathew, Anna all were excellent !!! One particular scene where the two brothers were fighting at home over a very trivial issue reminded me so much of my own kids! Not exactly the way they fight, but the reasons not very different....and that's exactly what Kumbalangi Nights is all about!!! Little snippets from each of our lives...it's what we have seen and grown up with in our homes and neighbourhoods! Saji, Bonny, Babymol, Bobby, Simi, Frankie are all people we know and that's what makes the movie so endearing!!!
This one also touches upon an oft pushed under the carpet issue prevalent in the society ! As real as it is, mental illness is still a very taboo topic in our society! Even now, there are people who think it's a behavioural issue that will fix itself after marriage and kids!!! It does not!!! Mental illness is just like any other ailment and it's nothing to ashamed of! It has to be identified and treated, with or without medication and adequate counselling. The day we can openly tell someone about it as casually as admitting to being diabetic is when we progress leaps and bounds as a society! The writer and director subtly tell the audience how important it is seek help at the right time! Here, we have one character who sought a helping hand when it mattered and another who camouflaged it! This movie is also about how they both react in different situations !!!!
You might wonder why I haven't talked about Fahadh Faasil yet!!! For me, Shammi was the piece de resistance of Kumbalangi! What an actor!!! All I can I say is you don't need extra terrestrials and comets to spook you out!!! He was creepy, scary and can scare the living day lights out of you with just a little twitch! He was that effective!!! It takes guts for a mainstream actor to take on such a role when he could settle in for the run of the mill ones...from his first movie as a gawky teenager, Fahadh has come a very very long way!! And, we can safely say that there is hope for Malayalam cinema even after the big Ms retire!!!
Kumbalangi Nights is a beautiful cinematic experience and you should not miss the opportunity to catch it on the big screen !!
Verdict : 10/10 !
