Moon and The Missing Boy: Book no.2

Hi everybody! Are you ready for the next adventure of Moon and Selene? You are? Great! So, we just got called for a search for a missing boy. For those who don’t know me, I'm Moon Ashley and I'm 16 years old. I study in Cranbourne College now. It was just a month ago that I graduated from Cranbourne High School! Amazing, right? Anyway, back to my adventure!

About three days ago, I was sitting with Selene chatting about our most recent case, the missing horse Mystery. Mystery had had a foal, and we got to keep it. Selene named her ‘Moon’, like my name. We got confused a lot, so, I became Moon-1 and the foal became Moon-2. As we were talking, we got a call. It was from my mom, Ashley Garcia. I know, she sounds like the star, Ashley Garcia, but that is definitely not her. My mom is my mom and in no way related to any movie. So anyway, my mom wanted us to help her on a case. The mission was:

A millionaire’s 16-year-old son had disappeared into the forest in the middle of the night. The boy’s name was Lionel. He had gone fishing with his friends before he disappeared.

I said that we should probably interrogate his friends to see if they knew anything. My mom said “Ok, we’ll do that. Anyway, both of you suit up. You’re coming with us. By the time you reach, we will have finished the interrogation.” I was very happy so I went to suit up and Selene joined me.

A few minutes later, we were ready. We said good-bye to my aunt and cousins. Ready for the adventure, we climbed onto our bikes. We started the bike and zoomed away. We reached the location my mom sent in about 5 minutes. My mom greeted us as we walked inside. She said “Hi, you two! The crime site is about a mile or two away from here. Should we go?” I said “Yup! Let’s go! One question. We can’t take our bikes, so, how are we going to look in the forest?” She replied “Actually, you can take your bikes. There is a forest mode where it turns to camouflage and the wheels turn into dirt bike wheels, so you can take them! Get ready fast!” She ran to her bike and jumped on. I did the same, but Selene hesitated to get on her bike. She said “Moon, is this a good idea? I’m worried that it’s going to be very dangerous in there. Should I be doing this?” I said “Selene if you want to sit out, you can. It’s fine. No one’s going to laugh at you. See, I’m worried too. But if my mom is going, I only want to be there to protect her. And if you’re coming, I’ll protect you too.” She smiled and said “Well then, we should get going, mustn’t we? After you, Moon.” I grinned and we raced after my mom.

The woods were dark, damp and creepy. But I wasn’t going to tell that to Selene. I didn’t want to worry her much. She was already stressed about the journey. My mom was by our side, cutting and slashing leaves out of the way. Soon, we reached the site. CAUTION tapes were all around the place. We started searching, but we found only a few signs of struggle and some drops of blood here and there. Just as we were wrapping up the search, Selene found a small and tiny trail for us to follow. Thankfully, we had brought our bloodhounds to help track the new trail. The dogs were released and one of them found the direction Lionel must have gone. She bounded down the trail and Selene said “Well, let’s follow that dog!”

It led us on an hour-long trip that resulted in us taking a tiny break to rest and hydrate before resuming our search. As we were packing our things, I found a trail of footprints that seemed to belong to a young person. I told Selene about this and asked her if she would help me search. She said slowly and hesitantly, “Ok... but which way are we supposed to go? Also, aren’t you going to tell your mom that you’re going?” I said “No, because she’s going to stop us. Plus, she trusts the bloodhound’s nose, so I can’t change her mind.” A voice behind me said “Well, she will believe you when she sees the path herself.” I turned and found my mom behind us. She said “I’m not letting you two, under-aged kids, go on a side mission without one of MAS’s finest agents. And that’s me, ok?” I sighed and replied “Ok, fine Mom. But you have to promise not to lead us, okay? We’ll take one bloodhound, if you seriously want to have them on our mission.” She nodded and somehow without anyone looking at us, we got a bloodhound, got it to sniff the track and when the dog ran down the trail, we followed the dog through the woods until the track ended.

We followed the bloodhound for half-an- hour or so until it stopped and started barking loudly. I was pretty sure that meant the trail had ended. So, we looked around, but again, all we saw were a few splatters of blood here and there. I wondered, why there were so many splatters of blood, and I heard a suspicious noise just in the nick of time. I yelled “Trap! Move, move, move!” My mom stared at me in confusion, but Selene reacted faster. She pushed my mom away as a cage fell exactly where they were standing. Another cage fell where I was standing too, but I had moved away before I could get trapped. Then more traps appeared. A flaming axe came out of nowhere and started swinging above our heads, coming closer and closer every second. We ran to another side, but it just conjured up more traps. We activated lasers, a trip wire, a barrel bomb, a huge bear trap, a tiger pit, etc. We got so tired that we almost fell into a tiger pit. All the same, Selene twisted her ankle as we fell in the tiger pit, but we put her on the ground for her to rest. She whispered in my ear “It isn’t a trap, it’s an illusion.” After she said that, she promptly passed out. Thankfully, she was light, so, between my mom and I, we could lift her and take her with us. I told my mom about what Selene had said. She put her hand through one of the trip wires, and it went right through. The only things that were actual traps were the cages and the lasers. So, as we were getting through the lasers, they suddenly turned off. At that exact moment, Selene woke up. We put her on the ground. I looked at both of them and grumpily said “It’s another trap, isn’t it?” A millisecond after what I said, all four of us, the dog, my mom, Selene and I fell into a hole and went down screaming and/or whining.

We went so fast that I thought my stomach had been left way above. Since I was unable to breathe properly, I closed my eyes and passed out.

After a while, I woke up. The blurry outline of someone with a tired face loomed over me, and I somehow knew it was a boy. His bandaged arms were untying me, then my mom and last of all, Selene. He looked worried for Selene’s leg, but I didn’t think he wanted to say anything. As his outline gradually became clearer, I realized he was almost as tall as me, and I immediately knew that this boy was the kid who had gone missing. This kid... was Lionel.

Lionel apologized for the traps that got us tied up, but when his friends attacked him, he needed to get a good, safe and secure security system. I listened carefully to what he said and asked “Why did your friends attack you?” He replied “Well, they’ve always been after my father’s money, but they did it quietly so that I wouldn’t know. But, you see, being in the shadow of your billionaire dad makes you good at guessing others’ behaviors. So, I’ve always known that my so-called friends have been after my father’s money. See, on the day that I had apparently disappeared, my friends had attacked me. They had hidden knives under their clothing. At the first chance they got, they pulled out their knives and slashed me here and there.

“While I was fighting them off, I fell into a ditch, sprained my ankle and broke my hand. Once I was in the ditch, they figured that I’d probably sit there until they came back later. Thankfully, I had seen the ditch before and had secretly tied a rope to a heavy rock and dropped it into the ditch. But I still broke my hand. So, I’ve been stuck here, applying ointments to where they slashed me.

“I found this place I was 10, and during my holidays, I would go down to my tiny workshop and make stuff that would conjure up illusions to make people think that there were traps. I perfected them over the years and when I came, I fixed them all here so that my friends would think that it was dangerous to come into this area. Anyway, I think it’s finally time for all of us to return to our own homes. I’ll just apply a little bit more ointment to your wounds.” He applied a little more of his silvery ointment and bandaged up my last cut. We headed out towards our search party with the dog leading us towards them.

An hour later, we stumbled into the camp, only to find mass panic. People were running here and there. Someone spotted us and said “STOP! They’re here! With another kid?” They crowded around us and asked so many questions until Selene said “Stop asking us questions please!” Everyone moved away, murmuring to themselves. We told the entire story and when we were done, Lionel stood up and said “Hi. My name is Lionel. I’m the kid who apparently disappeared.” He turned to me and asked “Ok... so, can I go home now? I really want to see my parents!” and made a funny face. Everyone laughed and we all headed home.

When his parents saw Lionel, they wept so much they could have filled a swimming pool with tears of joy. Once they were done hugging and crying, Lionel turned to me and said “Thank you for coming to look for me. If you hadn’t come, I would be stuck there for a month! So... maybe catch you later?” I smiled and said “Ok, see you later.” Once he was gone Selene nudged me in the arm and I saw her grinning widely. I asked “What? What is it?” She said “Nothing. Hey, Moon. Do you mind if I tell you something?” I told her to say what she wanted. She said “I hope that we have more adventures like this!” Both of us grinned crazily at each other. I said “You’re right! I love these adventures... but in the meantime, it’s time to party!” She smiled and we joined the big party that Lionel’s parents organized for everyone.
