The husband and I agree on very few things...and team Argentina is one of them....and over the last many years we have shared many heartbreaks ... And this year was no different ...
However, this note is for Child #1 who watched her first live match with her parents from whom she learnt to fall in love with Team Argentina and Lionel Messi....
Your Amma watched her first ever match in 1986 and there was a man who weaved magic with the ball...it was mesmerising to watch a 5 ft 4inch man "nutmeg" the ball through opponents as if they never existed and that is when 22 men running after a white ball seemed so very mesmerising to a 2nd grader ... You may read about " Hand of God " if you do a little research but back then it didn't really matter....you see, Trolls didn't really exist then...everyone just loved the game for what it was, unlike today where no one spares an opportunity to put the other down ! Anyways , I digress .... So this little man was called Maradona and he was the man who converted your Amma into an Argentine fan ... And, she followed every match they played irrespective of the result and adulation only grew....over time, life happened and other interests became more important....but every 4 years since, when the first ball of FIFA world cup rolled, her heart beat only Argentina and it will be so forever...not because they are the best in the world but because that was the team that taught her to love the game...and until the day the Indian flag makes it presence felt, it will always be Argentina !!!
Ananya, this year was your first FIFA and you followed the matches and news with interest because your parents were interested...you loved the team we love because you heard us talking about them... The friendly banters with Tiju uncle made you read up more about the other teams and yet you decided to stay loyal to Messi & co...I know the loss broke your heart today....but I do hope you take some lessons from the day...no matter how badly beaten up you are, try until your last breath for you never know when the tides change. And no team can survive long on individual brilliance....everyone has to contribute equally. Your favourite team lost today primarily because they were not effective as a team and because they had an ineffective coach . However , despite all the shortcomings , they played the best game of the tournament today. It just happened that the French played a better game! And , the better team won. Any achievement in life is a lot of hard work and, the French team worked a little harder than Argentina ....so, don't lose heart sweets,....let's hope they retrospect and work harder towards their goal and that of millions of others rooting for them....! Who knows, maybe they are just waiting for you to go to Qatar to cheer for them in 2022!!!!
Vamos Argentina , always and forever (despite the losses)!
